Milton’s Languages:
The Impact of Multilingualism on Style
Introduction
I came late to Milton studies, but at last saw how to write this book. I had studied all the same languages as Milton, if I now added Hebrew. I understood the joy of discovering a new self through a new language.
Description
At first, Milton composed in all his languages. Then, for poems, he chose only English. Part One explores how he learnt his tongues and tried them out, but came to domicile the others in his English.
Part Two shows the many ways in which they bore fruit there,in Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes.
